Tear-Off Day Blocks

A day block is a small, satisfying object with one engineering problem: it is a stack of hundreds of loose sheets held together by a strip of glue at the head, and that glue has to do two contradictory things every single morning for a year.

It has to hold every remaining page firmly, and it has to release exactly one page cleanly when pulled. Too strong and the page tears across, leaving a ragged half sheet nobody can remove; too weak and the block sheds a handful at a time. Padding adhesive is a real specification with a real grade, and it is the whole reason a cheap day block is annoying by March.

The second problem is that the block gets shorter all year. It starts tall and ends as a thin wafer, so a stand designed only for a full block leaves a flapping remnant by autumn. We set the stand or the backing board to hold the block at both extremes, and specify the head board so the last twenty pages are as square as the first twenty.
